Essay

My ACLC journey started nearly 8 years ago when my older brother Antonio Ruiz decided to attend the school. From that moment I wanted to attend ACLC for the sole reason to attend the same school as my brother. But since then my reason for attending this incredible school has changed my life and has given me gifts that have helped throughout my high school career and will continue to help me throughout my adult life.

The qualities that ACLC has instilled on me don't just apply to physical gifts such as public speaking or a good work ethic. But the qualities that have learned go deeper into the way I think and not just the way I act. One of the most important lessons I've learned is to go to school not just because you have to take advantage of an opportunity to learn. Advancing my public speaking skills and learning how to work with people in group projects are all important skills that I have learned during my time here that will carry me far in life. My time as being M.C as for the community has advanced my public speaking skills beyond anything I could have imagined. My time serving the school's leadership has furthered my organization and planning skills which will help me in my adult life. However those skills and experiences  pale in comparison to the gift that ACLC has instilled in me is that of learning for the sake of learning rather than feeling like learning is a burden on my existance. Learning is one of the most incredible parts of life and now, thank to this amazing school I have learned to enjoy learning as the beautiful gift that it is.

ACLC has created a new way of thinking for me. Through math, science, english and digital music I have developed an ulterior standard of think for myself a new basic so to speak. Math and english and science are classes that all schools require their students to take however at ACLC I have changed my way of thinking into viewing these subjects that have deeper meaning reason and logic skills waiting to be explored rather than dull subjects that have already been explored to their full potential. Rather than just settling and choosing to put the least amount of effort into learning these subjects because of ACLC I have begun to realize that these subjects have only barely been explored and that it is my responsibility as not just a learner of ACLC but a learner of the world to explore these subjects to their full potential.

One of thing that I am truly grateful ACLC has done for me is that it has not only just taught me academic skills but also logic and reason skills as well. A few years ago while I was in physics class there was a conflict between a group of learners as to whether or not all of the members of the group project had participated equally on the project. As I was not directly involved in the conflict I chose to stay out of it and watch observe the conflict. However this conflict still affected me as I was a member of the group and when we asked our facilitator what exactly we should do he essentially said that we need to figure out this issue for ourselves. It was right then and there that I realized this is similar to the real world, I am going to have to solve my own problems by myself rather than relying on people around to solve them for me. We ended up solving our conflict that ended up making everyone in the group unhappy. However I also realized that despite our non-ideal outcome we still accomplished something as a group; we solved a disagreement that we had peaceably for the first time in my life.

For most of my my middle school life at ACLC when it came to group projects I lived by the motto ‘do enough work so that nobody notices that you're not doing any work’ and for my middle school life in this work ethic worked out fine. However, when high school came around I quickly realized that there was not room for slack in group projects. The academic rigor was just too high for me to not take the work seriously. As I mentioned in the previous paragraph, not only did I quickly learn how to work as an individual during group projects I also learned how to act as a unit with my group. Communication and negotiation were skills that I quickly learned I would need to develop if I was to be successful at ACLC. Another skill that I developed from experience with group projects at ACLC is learning when to take charge and be a leader in the group and when to step back and listen to the group and become a follower. Learning when to lead and follow is something that I have struggled with for my entire life. However, ACLC has taught me to be conscious of my presence and knowing how my presence affects others around me which is the greatest leadership skill I have developed.

Technology is the future of this world. Now whether we like this fact or not we must learn to adapt to the future. This is something that ACLC has truly prepared me for. I wouldn't even be writing this if it weren't for technology just simply the fact that we as seniors are forced to make a website rather than just turn in an essay shows how innovative of an educational experience ACLC provides. For better or worse ACLC’s technology hasn’t always been the most reliable however despite the hundreds of dysfunctional computers I have attempted to use the good that has come out these experiences is the knowledge I have developed in troubleshooting computers. From these hundreds of experiences I have learned how to troubleshoot computers and identify and adapt to problems so that they do not impede on my educational experience.

ACLC, rather than just teaching me and not giving my educational a second thought it has chosen to delve deeper to develop me as a human being. I have learned real adult skills that will carry me far in life from this school. Simply the fact that we are required to make this website shows that this school cares about the product that it produces rather than just viewing me as a disposable student. The skills I have developed from this school are do not just apply to school and my education but skills that are applicable to the real world and my future as an adult as an adult for my career and social development.

                                            v                       Conflicting Human Nature

On the surface, Mary Shelley’s novel, Frankenstein, may seem like a typical horror novel, the first of it’s kind and a pioneer for the genre itself. It may be easy to brush Frankenstein aside as simply one of the first horror novels, however looking below surface meaning, Mary Shelley's novel, originally published in 1818, makes timeless statements on human nature and the naturally contradictory forces progress and tradition that have shaped society since the beginning of time. In modern times one of the best ways to see these opposing ideals of progressivism and traditionalism in action is through politics. Politicians are a reflection of public opinion; if public opinion is leaning more traditional than politicians sell themselves as traditional candidates if public opinion is more progressive politicians come off as progressive candidates. The statements made in Shelley's Frankenstein translate to the world as it was to Shelley in 1818 but the morals and messages in Frankenstein are just as applicable to the world today and even the 2016 presidential election.

At the beginning of the book we meet Victor Frankenstein, although we originally meet him as a child it becomes clear that he has an adventurous spirit and a pursuit of greatness that will not be tamed. Later Victor finds a passion for science saying “My father was no scientific and I was left to struggle with a child’s blindness added to a student's thirst for knowledge”  (Shelley 36) Early on we see that Victor is no ordinary man, Victor, from the very beginning had to carve path for himself, a path of progress. But the path of progress and innovation is never easy, it full of blockades in various forms later in the book Victor encounters his first obstacle,  “they know that metals cannot be transmuted and that the elixir of life...They (people) ascend into the heavens... Such were the professor’s words—rather let me say such the words of the fate—enounced to destroy me… I will pioneer a new way, explore unknown powers” (46) Here we see the natural resistance towards progress. Victor’s professor is a traditionalist and Victor, is a progressive. Victor is denounced, treated like an outcast because of his scientific endeavors. His theories of “combing the works of alchemists with modern natural philosophy to create something incredible”(Shelly 43) are considered unnatural and against the way of life. Because of this Victor becomes determined to prove his professor wrong, to “pioneer a new way”. But this resistance is natural, right? There will always be people who want things to stay they way they are because it has always worked for them. At every corner we turn well there it’s scientific progress or it’s social progress there are people there to say ‘no that’s not the way it should be’. But from that, as we see sprouts Victor’s determination to prove others wrong, which is a the heart and soul behind all revolutions.

Revolutions occur every day through various form and under a variety of names. In the 2016 election, one Bernie Sanders ran as a candidate that delivered a message of liberalism and progressiveness that appealed to many Americans, but just like Victor, this message was met with resistance. Throughout the entire election process, Sanders was preaching a theme of change and revolution at one point saying “What my campaign is about is a political revolution - millions of people standing up and saying, enough is enough. Our government belongs to all of us, and not just the handful of billionaires.” (Talbot) This spoke to many people and from it, as Sanders said himself, sprouted a political revolution that changed the way the game politics. Like Victor, Sanders sought out to not play by the rules, to revolutionize science and politics respectively. Yet just like Victor Sanders revolution did not come without pushback. Republican Senator Marco Rubio during the election said: “I love Bernie’s ideas and I wish they were possible but that’s just not the way it works.” (Rubio) Just like Victor, there are na sayers people who say that what you want to accomplish isn’t within the realm of possibility. It may appear that I am glamorizing progress as our only option to move forward but it’s not. Shelley also makes bold statements on tradition and reasons why we as humans prefer to stick with tradition and what's established in this world.

I’ve already addressed the perspective of progress and why people are inspired to enact change, but Shelley also makes statements about tradition and what tradition means to society, after all, there are characters that oppose progress and wish to stick to tradition in Frankenstein. In the film Frankenstein Victor's father begs him to stop his experiments saying “it’s unnatural, Victor, please come home” similarly in the film Victor’s mentor begs him saying “it’s not natural science has limitations Victor give up this experiment”(Whale 1931) Of course, as we all know, Victor adheres to none of this advice and continues to pursue his scientific advancements. But how could Victor know any better? He’s been considered a scientific outcast his whole career, he’s never experienced the benefits of tradition and the scientific establishment. How does Victor know that he doesn't need to go outside of the scientific establishment in order to separate himself? It is always possible to work within tradition and what is established to achieve what Victor sought after; greatness. Similarly to Shelley’s theme of progress, her theme on tradition translates to our world today and the 2016 presidential election.

In 2016 there were several candidates that would themselves as people who were going to restore tradition in America and to re-establishing what has already been established. One candidate stood out from the crowd, one Donald Trump. He sold himself as a candidate who was going to undo many of changes that had made in recent years saying “we’re going to make things the way there where we are going make America great again.”(Trump) This message was an easy sell, things used to great for people and here is a candidate who claims that they will make things back to the way they used to be;  to restore tradition. For many people tradition has always been the route from them to talk, tradition has served them well and allowed them to prosper. Why embrace progress when tradition has served you so well? Why make a change when tradition is serving you well? After all, if it’s not broke then don't fix it.

Humans are naturally divided. There are always those who have it well off and inherently want things to stay the same. There are also those who are not so well off and naturally want to see a change in the world. This division is something that has put us at odds since the beginning of time. The people who are not so well off have are poor, underprivileged, and regarded as outcasts of society, they have been oppressed by “tradition” and as a result want to see an advancement in a world that has called them harm. People who are well of resisting change because they fear that it will comprise what they have accomplished; riches, fame, social standing all to waste there is a change if there is progress. But how would they know? How could they possibly know what other people are going through at their expense? And on the flip side how could they possibly know that there needs to be a change? They have never experienced the benefits of tradition. This statement on human nature and the natural divide between people that has dictated human history is why Frankenstein remains a statement on human nature even 200 years after its publication.

Internship

My internship I spent on the Sierra Pacific scented youth committee, on this committee we plan, organize, and execute weekend retreats for Lutheran youth throughout our synod. This internship had many ups and downs and covered many topics that I had never dealt with before but all in all it was an incredible experience that taught me many life skills that I can take with me into adulthood.

Days 1 through 3: (48 hours)

During these three days me and my fellow committee members planned out the retreat that would become the middle school youth retreat and the elementary school youth retreat. During this time I learned all the complex intricacies that go into planning a weekend retreat I had no idea how much planning had to be done in order to maintain a successful outcome. During these days for main lesson that I took away was how much detail had to go into planning such an event. All the things that I normally take for granted when I am attending such an event I now can see that they take a lot of hard work to make sure that the event runs smoothly. For example I never knew that I had to get in contact with the retreat site to tell them how many campers we were going to have so they could plan for meals, sleeping arrangements etc.

Days 4-6: (52 hours)

These two days were the elementary school retreat this was the first time that I got to see all of the hard work I had done during the planning meeting finally put into action it was incredible to see the fruits of my labor in action. During this weekend I learned many skills including how to adapt when they plan does not fall through and how to cope with situations that are difficult. At one point in the retreat the projector stopped working and we had to improvise and create a new activity on the spot for the campers to participate in, this was very difficult but now going forward I feel more confident that I will be able to handle situations that require me to think on my feet.

Days 7-9: (52 hours)

This weekend was the middle school retreat. This was another retreat that we had planned it during our summer planning meeting. I felt much more comfortable executing this retreat there and I had the previous one the experience that I had gained during elementary retreat was very useful. It was also very easy for me to handle middle schoolers compared to Elementary schoolers. This retreat operated much smoother than the elementary score sure there was no technical difficulties or unexpected problems that we adapt to. All in all my time during this internship has taught me many important planning skills and public speaking skills and how to control the crowd when you are responsible for them. But most importantly learning how to adapt to situations when they are not going the way that you expected was the most important thing that I took away from my time on the Sierra Pacific Synod Youth Committee.

By the end of my time on the Sierra Pacific sent and youth committee. I feel like I have a deeper understanding for the amount of effort, time and energy that goes into planning even a simple weekend retreat. I had no idea what the people at Aclc so you were going through when they were planning huge days such as the walkathon, Earth Day and other days that we have as traditions at Aclc. I now feel like I have the confidence to take on any planning challenge, I feel like I can plan an event with the confidence and the efficiency to make sure that it is done well and is successful. My time on the Sierra Pacific set a youth committee has also helped me develop my relationship skills, I have had to work with people that I would have never chosen to work with, and because of it I have been forced to get along with people and work effectively. I know that above all that is the skill that I will cherish most from my time on the Sierra Pacific Synod Youth Committee, because I know that for the rest of my life I'm going to have to work and deal with people that I do not like and now I feel like I have the tools to handle myself properly and to make sure that everything goes smoothly.

Visionary

There are many things that I hope to accomplish in the next 20 years of my life. I've begun to notice that what I wanted freshmen year and what I want now has changed drastically. In the next 20 year I intend on joining the ELCA Advocacy. An organization that works close with developing countries to helps solve some of their political and economical problems that plague their countries. I hope to use my degree in political science as a tool to help the world. Rather than using my degree as a tool to benefit myself I see myself in 20 years traveling around the world and working closely with the various world leaders to help solve the problems of the world and create a more sustainable future. My vision for my life does not involve living for myself, rather than trying my best to accumulate as much wealth as possible for myself I want to live my life to impact others in a positive light.
